Maintenance Frequency

How Often Should Solar Panels Be Cleaned in Spain?

While manufacturers often suggest a generic frequency, the intense conditions in southern Spain require a localized approach. Here is what you need to know for the Axarquía.

"How often should I clean my solar panels?" is the most frequent question we receive at Axar Solar Clean. If you look up the answer online, you might find generic advice suggesting once a year or even "whenever you see a drop in production."

In southern Spain, and specifically in the Axarquía region of Málaga, this generic advice is often insufficient. Our proximity to North Africa, our reliance on agriculture, and our long dry seasons create a unique set of challenges that dictate a more proactive cleaning schedule.

Factors Affecting Cleaning Frequency in Spain

The optimal frequency for your panels depends on several localized variables. Not all roofs in the Axarquía are equal.

Saharan Dust (Calima)

We experience several significant dust events every year. These orange-tinted sand clouds from the Sahara can coat a clean panel in a thick film of dust in just 24 hours.

Agricultural Pollen

If your property is near avocado, mango, or citrus groves, your panels will collect a sticky layer of pollen during the spring months (usually March-May).

Coastal Salt Spray

Properties in Nerja, Torrox Costa, or Torre del Mar face a light but persistent salt mist that can crystallize on the glass, attracting even more dust.

Rainfall Patterns

Southern Spain often goes 3-5 months without significant rainfall in the summer. During this time, dust build-up is relentless and cumulative.

For the majority of residential systems in the Axarquía, we recommend a bi-annual (twice a year) cleaning schedule.

1. The "Post-Pollen" Clean (April/May)

Once the heavy spring pollen season has finished, a clean ensures your panels are clear for the high-intensity sunlight of midsummer. This is when your system has the potential to produce the most energy (and save you the most money on air conditioning).

2. The "Pre-Winter" Clean (September/October)

After a long, dry summer of Saharan dust and zero rain, your panels are likely at their filthiest. A clean in the autumn prepares them for the lower sun angles of winter, where every percentage of efficiency counts towards heating your home or powering your pool heater.

When Once a Year is Enough

If your roof has a very steep pitch (over 35 degrees) and you are located in a high, windy area away from main roads and agriculture, nature might do a better job of keeping your panels clear. In these specific cases, a single thorough clean in the autumn might be sufficient to maintain performance.

Three Signs Your Panels Need a Clean Now

  1. Visible Dust or Discoloration: If you can see a grey or orange tint on the glass from the ground, you are already losing significant production.
  2. "Mud Rain" Spots: After a light shower during a calima event, you will see spotting. These act as thousands of tiny shadows over the solar cells.
  3. Drop in Peak Performance: Check your inverter app. If you notice that on a perfectly clear day your peak production is 10-15% lower than the same time last year, soiling is the most likely culprit.

Don't guess. Let us check.

We offer maintenance plans tailored to local conditions. Let Axar Solar Clean take the worry out of remembering your cleaning schedule.

FAQ

Should I clean my panels after every calima?

Ideally, yes. However, that can be expensive. We recommend waiting until the calima cycle has passed. Often, we get 2-3 dust events in a month. It is more cost-effective to perform one thorough clean after the cycle is over.

Does roof pitch matter?

Yes. Flat or low-pitch roofs (under 10 degrees) do not allow dirt to run off with water. They accumulate grime much faster than steep roofs and require more frequent cleaning.
